One of the oldest American dolls was the Kachina, which was made primarily by the Hopi Indians of Arizona. Kachinas were carved from cottonwood or cactus root, painted in symbolic colors, and dressed traditionally. Pueblo children learned about Kachinas from their kachina dolls. The Kachina were mythical ancestors of the Pueblo people. They were thought to live in a lake beneath the earth. The tribes held Kachina dances to celebrate visits from the spirits. The dancers gave kachina dolls to children, to inspire them to be like their Kachina ancestors.
